2.5 TD: DEMONSTRATE WHAT IS MEANT BY THE IDEA OF THE SCRIPTURES BEING INFALLIBLE

INTRODUCTION AND ALIGNMENT
In this exercise we will focus on the idea of the infallibility of scripture. To hold such a view, brings with it a certain set of ramifications. It means that Scripture cannot and will not fail. Indeed, it is incapable of failure.

Upon completion of this assignment you should be able to:
 Demonstrate what is meant by the idea of the scriptures being infallible.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Again, we want to define what we mean by the term. Infallible is defined as “absolutely trustworthy or sure; exempt from liability to error.” (dictionary.com) Thus, an evangelical view of the infallibility of scripture would insist that scripture is trustworthy in an absolute sense, and that as God’s Word it is incapable of error.
And so, if we adopt this posture, what does that mean for us? Where does this conclusion lead us as preacher/scholars?

Gregg R. Allison, in his Historical Theology, cites the Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy in the following points regarding scripture:
 “It is of infallible, divine authority in all matters upon which it touches; it is to be believed at God’s instruction, in all that it affirms; obeyed, as God’s command, in all that it requires; embraced, as God’s pledge, in all that it promises.”
 It denies “that the Scriptures receive their authority from the Church, tradition, or any other human source.”
 “The Scriptures are the supreme written norm by which God binds the conscience, and that the authority of the church is subordinate to that of Scripture.”

INSTRUCTIONS
1. In a brief, 1 page document, share your reaction to the Chicago Statement, along with any other scholarly reflection you might have. (You may want to compare the above statements with Wesley’s Quadrilateral, which can be accessed online.)
2. If you use sources, be sure to cite them in your document.
