The Impact of Complex Adaptive Systems
Week 5
1.J.J
Introduction
Complex adaptive systems (CAS) are new models that serve to improve analysis by revealing areas of organizational constancy and inconstancy. Complexity is often referred to as difficult or convoluted; a position where the reaction is not obvious. However, many reference this as complicated. Complexity science focuses on how patterns emerge from the myriad of interactions between people and comes from the notion of things being intertwined (Varney, 2007).
Impact of Leadership
Leaders within companies are often separated by their ability to withstand complex occasions and situations that occurs daily. Maintaining a sense of stability is important for organization to survive in such a competitive market. Inspired Media and Technology Solutions have experienced many changes both internal and external which have caused many changing to take place in their daily to day operations. Proper planning and executing is the foundation of the organization stability. However, more important is the organizations leaders’ ability to embrace the different traits and qualities of its employees. This method impacts leaders by creating a more diverse environment of personalities and strengths.
Changes within the Complex Adaptive System
Complexity science distinguishes the complexity of planning everything thoroughly.  Complex methods are specially recognized when individuals are working within constantly and unpredictably revolving environments. Complexity science proposes that the ideal way to plan is by creating minimum stipulations and an overall sense of instructions. The company must focus on its mission and the proper steps that must be taken to reach the desired mission. Flexibility is essential as organizations experiences changes daily. Change is inevitable within growing and thriving organizations.
Conclusion
In concluding, CAS is dynamic systems that can acclimate in and grow with a steady changing environment.  Essentially, CAS serves as a reminder to understand that there are no separations between a structure and its central environment in the idea that a system always adapts to a changing environment. However, the idea to examine the system closely is linked with several other related methods making up one ideal component.

The Impact of Complex Adaptive Systems
At Teachers Insurance Annuity Association and the College Retirement Equities Fund (TIAA-CREF), the operations unit handles the transfer of monies coming into and out of the company. There are a number of different areas that handle the money before the completion of the customer’s request. Each department, while separate, depends on others to complete the end-to-end process. A group of systems that connect to others to form a whole are complex adaptive system (Edson, 2012).
Impact of Changes
The Operations leaders at TIAA-CREF review the process to identify areas for process improvement. Any enhancement to the system or process requires a meeting to discuss and identify the overall impact to each department. The leaders understand that changes to one part of the process create changes to another. There is a constant need for updates to complex adaptive system because a change in the environment brings about a change to the entire process (Pellisier, 2010). For example, customers expressed a need for quality review checks prior to the payout of their funds, and management added an extra quality step within a few months. The overall processing time increased to an additional date because of the addition of this extra step.
Impact on Leadership and Innovation
Leaders working with complex adaptive systems must be flexible because changes often occur. With each improvement, there is an opportunity to learn something new. Leaders must create an environment where employees feel comfortable to offer process improvement ideas or suggestions. Companies look for ways to remain competitive, so they look for innovative suggestions from their employees on ways to develop their products (Pellisier, 2010). Employees see flaws or discrepancies more often than leaders because they work with the systems each day.
Implications of Practice or Research
The credit of research around complex adaptive systems goes to scholars from the early 20th century (Hall & Clark, 2010. The time from then to now allowed researchers to look at the topic from different perspectives; however, the financial industry changed from a century ago. New researchers benefit from comparing the data from the past with modern-day cultures and processes. What can the leaders at companies such as TIAA-CREF learn from adopting complex adaptive systems?  How would you market the use of this approach to a CEO?
