2. Explain the term “sheets of sound”. What song(s) made this technique famous?

3. List the elements of the “Sweeping Sound” or “The Sweep” that evolved in Coltrane’s music in the 60s.

John Coltrane’s Quartet contained some of the finest players in Modern Jazz–McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums.  Click below to listen and view two television performances of this amazing quartet playing one of Coltrane’s songs, “Impressions”.  In the first one from 1963, describe the piano playing of the great McCoy Tyner in this recording–what musical contributions does he perform?   What musical function is his left hand doing?  What musical function is his right hand doing?

In the second one from 1961, describe the music activity you see and hear.  What mood is conveyed in this performance?  What impressions to you have of each of these amazing musicians–Elvin Jones on the drums; Jimmy Garrison on the bass, John Coltrane on the tenor saxophone, Eric Dolphy on the alto saxophone, and McCoy Tyner on the piano.
