Assignment: Prozac and other SSRIs
Prozac is the trade name for fluoxetine and was the first of the selective serotonergic reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) developed. Sales of the drug
skyrocketed following its release and other SSRIs have since been developed. This class of drugs quickly became the most common type of
antidepressants prescribed.
For this assignment, you are tosubmit answers to all of the following questions:
1. Summarize why Prozac and other SSRIs are so popular. Discuss the factors that lead to their popularity and the evidence to support the
use of these medications as a treatment for mental disorders.
2. Summarize why some people are very concerned about the use of the SSRI antidepressants. Discuss the evidence that is used to support the
arguments for either avoiding or limiting use of these medications.
3. Based on your review of the literature, provide your own opinion on the use of the SSRI antidepressants. Justify your answer. Comment on
whether there should be any limits on their use (and what those limits should be) and why.
Maximum word count (excluding your title page and reference list) = 2000 words
Reminder:
Provide at least25analytical and appropriate in-text citations in the body of your assignment,the papers that get the better marks have a larger
number of references! They’re just better researched papers, and have more breadth.
Don’t go into detailof the background on how SSRIs work(e.g. how SSRI’s work within the synapse at a molecular level). 2000 words isn’t a huge
amount of space, and you should focus on the topic at hand, rather than getting into the nitty-gritty molecular biology of it.

Literature Searches and Journal Articles
This assignment will require that you search the published academic literature to find relevant published research articles that directly
address the assignment topic. You will then be required to read, summarize and critically evaluate these articles. You will need to use the UBC
library website to perform your literature search and to access the full text articles. If you are not familiar with how to do literature
searches or access journal articles, you will find helpful information on the UBC library website and you can also consult with a UBC librarian.
