Final Semester Paper
Throughout the semester, you have been completing Activity Assignments
involving articles you’ve found related to Education/Employment, IDDT
(drug/alcohol abuse by people who also have a psychiatric diagnosis), and Wellness.
These assignments were short-form in nature, as you gave a brief overview of how
the news story related to the topics we’ve been discussing in class.
The goal of this assignment is to write a 4-6 page (double-spaced) APA-style
paper where you take one of the articles you’ve already looked at from a cursory
level, and examine more deeply not only the story itself, but what lies underneath
the story, as well as evidence of the related emerging trend/topic that we’ve
discussed in class.
The final paper is due 4/17/16. Papers can be uploaded to an assignment
box in Moodle that will be available Week 13. Please remember that multiple
sources of peer-reviewed material (minimum of 3 published 2010 or later from
reputable sources) are required.
Your paper should use the following sub headings. Please address all
questions.
Brief Opening Summary & Rationale for Choosing the Story
• What is the news story? (1-2 paragraph summation)
• Why did you choose this news story?
• What about it made you decide it was worth sharing for this course?
Facts vs. Emotion, What Lies Underneath the Story?
• Are there important facts that appear missing from the news story?
• What do you think of the language used? Any bias or slant to the news story?
• Do you see any hidden agenda, considering the source of the news story?
Tying in the Larger Emerging Trend/Topic
• What emerging trend/topic that we’ve covered in this class does this news
story relate to?
• How do they relate? Please make this connection clear.
• What does the evidence say about this emerging trend/topic? (Cite at least 3
peer-reviewed articles from 2010 or later about the trend/topic here)
