FAILURE OF VICENTE FOX TO ATTAIN ECONOMIC REFORMS IN MEXICO

CRITICAL ARGUEMENT OF THE ARTICLE

The article looks into the failure of Vicente Fox to attain economic growth in Mexico after a land slide win as the favorite presidential candidate and attainment of a major milestone by dethroning single party politics that monopolized Mexican politics for seven consecutive decades.

His failure is majorly attributed to lack of a proper game plan on how to deliver on his pre-election promises of economic reforms in Mexico. The situation was further worsened by factors such as the economic slow down world wide in the year 2000 and terrorist attacks on the United States (U.S) and his inability to garner a majority following in congress.

Vicente Fox was popularly elected because Mexicans wanted economic change and despite all the problems he was inheriting from the previous regime, he was expected to achieve economic turn round.

The fox administration was coupled by major problems but equally high expectations were demanded from it. With the help of his team he was expected to restructure the macro economy and move from one that was heavily dependent on state resources to a more self sufficient one. This was supposed to be achieved through empowering of small enterprises that would in turn reduce unemployment and also address the issue of inequality in income between the rich and the poor. He was expected to meet all this demands while being faced by major opposition from congress and thus could not pass any policy for reforms and only managed to pass one proposal. The opposition was due to inability to build a coalition between the various parties in the congress a factor that he should have considered and planned for the moment he got into power. The situation was driven further driven down hill by weakening economy world wide in 2000 and terrorist attacks on the U.S on the onset of 2001 which weakened the Mexican relations with the U.S. this stalled the economic reforms Mexico. All this factors served to portray Fox as the most inefficient president in the region and acerbated the increase in unemployment levels and poorly performing energy sector further inequities in income distribution and in generally brought the economy to its knees and the burden of this political inefficiencies were borne by poor citizens of Mexico.
