Essay on Deming

Introduction

Dr. Deming is an elite writer in diverse fields based on his philosophies of management; in these philosophies, he summarizes major concepts to fourteen points and also the aspects of reflective knowledge. The fourteen points mainly focus on the major sections of the profound knowledge system precisely those of the purpose of an organization, the drive out of fear in organizations and also the understanding of connotations of these concepts. He summarizes his philosophies using theories such as the system theory that show the reasons of business optimization and helps to determine deliberation factors of consideration in creation of an organization, incentives for thriving performance, and also the use of performance appraisals to ensure maximum performance of an organization. Another theory is that of knowledge that appreciates literature to promote organizational thoughtfulness. The variation theory is also stipulated by Deming and emphasizes on the need for understanding in organizational management which involves accepting the psychology of the personnel. This paper focuses on Deming teachings’ concerning profound knowledge taking in consideration the theories mentioned and also compares them with the wisdoms of other philosophers concerning organization management a key aspect for success determination in a company (Brewer, 2005).

Deming’s teachings on profound knowledge

Dr. Deming emphasizes on the use of reflective knowledge in his teachings purporting that this kind of knowledge can be divided in to four bodies which are mainly those of systems, knowledge theory, variation and that of psychology. He emphasizes that knowledge comes from gathered and researched information; this is termed as a pre-requisite for learning since without it predictions about certain aspects can not be done. This requires planning, experiments and analyzing of the information collected so that deductions can be made. He proposes a cycle of acting, planning, studying and doing the suggested options for success in management. These teachings help us to see how significant organized management is and how basic it is in the running of any organization though complex. The significance of these features is to encourage eminent economic management in any organization enhancing total eminent management (Brewer, 2005).

In the systems appreciation teachings involved appreciate how stakeholders of business management assist in the progress of the business, how to improve and optimize their performance so that an organization can thrive. It involves taking a holistic view of an organization’s performance (Deming, 2005). The variation of knowledge requires appreciated approach of evaluation on the changes in data concerning gains and losses of a company calling for actions to be taken to either encourage the particular action or deter it. The theory of knowledge emphasizes the need to improve existing processes or either contingent them with innovative ones which reduce the cost and maximize on quality and while minding on the dynamic changes in market. Psychology on the other hand deals with understanding needs of personnel motivation, their pay, self esteem enhancement and is a key aspects of optimization of production and delivery in an organization (Deming, 2005). These key aspects are inter-dependent since system management requires responsibility which can only be enhanced if there is accountability, all these aspects can only come to play part if research has been done extensively. These systems look at management as key aspects of success thus must be emphasizes in any organization and from a personal perspective advocating on their embracement is of great importance for company’s success. My leadership mirrors that of Dr, Deming in terms of psychology and appreciation of systems though I have experienced difficulties in maintaining these systems since they are expensive to implement. The theories of knowledge and that of variation however can not be applied since my company is small and they would not make significant meaning (Brewer, 2005).

Comparison of Deming’s philosophies with those of other elites

According to Deming the issue of organization is very much emphasized though it is complex and at times unrealistic due to the cost of implementation (Deming, 2005). Teachings of Deming are similar to those of Juran and Ishikawa since they put emphasizes on quality assurance as the main aspect of consideration in management. The three elites claim that this will ensure long term goals for success are instilled and that customer’s satisfaction in any business operation is put as priority. They also emphasize on the improvement of organization processes, services and cultures for continued success.

Dr. Juran however focuses on these aspects feasibility as a tri action consisting of quality in control, planning and improvement of business projects unlike Deming who focuses on it as a circular quadric consisting of planning, acting, checking and doing what is required for business success. Ishikawa on the other hand focuses on it as a process of discovering causatives of problems in business management and possible effects of these problems. The three philosophers put priorities of successful quality management to be different though aimed at a similar focus; success of an organization (The original quality gurus, 2011).

Dr. Taguchi also one of the gurus has the variations focus similar to Deming’s approach however he focuses on quality management from a 4 level process. The four levels are robustness in designing of products, designing of parameters, processes of statistical controls and also inspection of products for good eminence. These can be summarized in design of parameters, systems and also ensuring there is tolerance in deploying functional development (The original quality gurus, 2011). This method emphasizes on continuum in diversity of production to promote company’s survival and customer satisfaction unlike the philosophies above.

Shigeo Shingo also emphasizes on the Single Minute Exchange of Die (SMED) (The original quality gurus, 2011) and also the Poke-Yoke system.  These aspects help in speedy and quality manufacturing and also proofing of existent mistakes and their consequent prevention, concepts that are not incorporated in Deming’s philosophies. In their enhanced encouragement on quality like the Deming teachings they distinguish errors from defects so that such can be avoided if not deterred a technique that is unique.

Another elite Crosby encourages the policies of zero defects and quality freedom enhancing cost effective quality and eminent production of goods to avoid sub-standard services that encourage reduced customer satisfaction. This is more close to Shigeo model unlike that of Deming (The original quality gurus, 2011). Another theory from Peters emphasizes on good leadership involving listening, teaching and facilitating business organization as aspects of good management unlike Deming’s philosophies. He also emphasizes on innovation and customer oriented focus for success in business management. An initiator of quality that is stringently controlled Armand, wraps up this highlighting that maintenance and improved efforts enable service production to be economical and customer fulfilling (The original quality gurus, 2011). He emphasizes on quality administration and commitment as crucial in organization’s development. He however points out that technology should be improved unlike Deming’s case making it a unique perspective.

Conclusion

They are three groups of gurus who give teachings on quality management; one of these is Deming who put emphasizes on a plan of management using fourteen points and four theories of organizational management in order to solve various company problems. He emphasizes on discovering what problem there is, how it can be solved, feasibility of the solutions and actions to be used to enhance solution’s adaptation. These aspects are also emphasized by other philosophers such as Taguchi, Ishikawa and Juran among others all emphasizing on total quality management in businesses. This has been foreseen to enhance company production, diversification of products and ensuring that businesses are customer oriented for satisfaction. Advocacy on embracing these aspects is important in business management since it helps on reflection of the progress of a business and ultimately its triumph.
