Discuss and provide evidence for the following statement: Although Florence Nightingale
developed an understanding that the environment directly affects a patient’s wellbeing over 100
years ago, her observations and theory are relevant in today’s healthcare environments. Many
public and community health problems could be avoided by application of her theory. Many
health promotion programs developed by nurses and health care professionals are based on the
application of her theory.
Example: The plan to halt e coli die to contaminated water in First Nations communities is based
on the application of Nightingale’s theory.
When discussing the validity of this thesis, use one of the following examples to prove your
argument. Demonstrate your critical thinking by applying Nightingale’s theory to:
 analyze why the problem happened and/or continues
 explain how application of Nightingale’s theory is part of the response to the health issue

1. Canada Prenatal Nutrition Program (CPNP)
The Canada Prenatal Nutrition Program (CPNP) is a community-based program funded by the
Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC).
Since 1995, CPNP has provided funding to community groups across Canada to develop and
deliver programs that promote public health and provide support to improve the health and wellbeing of pregnant women, new mothers and babies

facing challenging life circumstances. The
goals of CPNP are to improve maternal-infant health, increase the rates of healthy birth weights,
as well as to promote and support breastfeeding. The program also seeks to promote the creation
of partnerships within communities and strengthen community capacity to increase support for
vulnerable pregnant women and new mothers.
There are approximately 279 CPNP projects serving over 51,000 pregnant women and
parents/caregivers in over 2,000 communities across Canada each year. In addition, a separate
stream of the program administered through Health Canada serves Inuit and First Nation
women living on-reserve.
CPNP fills a distinct gap in communities. Almost all projects report that they provide a unique
service in their community. Many of the other available prenatal services do not meet the needs
of the CPNP target population.

2. Enhancing Nutritional Care in Acute Care Hospitals

Ontario. Poor food and fluid intake are too common in acute care hospitals. Nightingale
knew that nutrition was important and needed for recovery.

3. Toronto Public Health and TB Program Prevention, Management and Treatment
Demonstrate that the theory of Nightingale is the basis of the City of Toronto TB program for
under-housed, homeless and correctional populations. It is estimated that one in three people
worldwide is infected with the TB bacteria. In Toronto, about 300 people become sick with
tuberculosis every year. Treatment for TB disease involves taking medication every day for six
months or longer. Although treatment can take a long time, a person can be cured of TB once
treatment is complete. Different specialty teams in the TB program work together to provide
support for individuals with TB as well as their families and to help prevent the spread of TB in
Toronto.

MSF is conducting a mass immunization campaign in Ethiopia’s Gambella region, against the
risk of cholera spreading across the border from neighbouring South Sudan. In the first round of
the campaign, 151,723 people — South Sudanese refugees living in camps and transit centres
and the host community — were vaccinated against cholera. The second round started midAugust.

A vaccine against cholera is being used on a large scale for the first time in Ethiopia by teams
from Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF). The mass immunization
campaign will protect South Sudanese refugees in Ethiopia’s Gambella region, as well as the

host community, against the risk of cholera spreading across the border from neighbouring South
Sudan, where an epidemic had been declared in June
Cholera is endemic in the Gambella region, while overcrowding and poor sanitation in the
area’s refugee camps could provide a perfect breeding ground for the Vibrio cholerae bacillus.
More than 185,000 South Sudanese refugees have been registered in the Gambella region by the
UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
