Communicative competence

How would you assess your students’ communicative competence in your classroom? What methods or techniques would you use? Why?

Cummins proposed a distinction between cognitive/academic language proficiency (CALP) and basic interpersonal communicative skills (BICS). What is the difference between CALP and BICS?

Do you agree this statement or no and why?

“Communicative competence involves the ability to converse or correspond with a native speaker of the target language in a real-life situation, with emphasis on communication of ideas rather than on correctness of language form or knowledge of grammar rules.

A student’s communicative competence can be assessed during conversation with other students in the classroom. Communicative Language Teaching method (CLT) makes the assessment of students in classroom an ongoing activity because students are constantly using the English language to communicate their thoughts and ideas in the classroom. I think it is important to use teaching methods that frequently uncover a student’s communicative competence so that I will be able to gauge a student’s progress in every class meeting”.
