In the short story " A Worn Path " by Eudora Welty, the author
introduces the reader to a very old black woman named Phoenix. Welty
uses her only named character to symbolize the struggles of all black
who are born into slavery, and have to reinvent challenges to their
existence, Welty uses Phoenix as an archetypal character on a quest for
redemption, justice, and respect from all society that she encounters on
her journey through life.
